There's exciting news for the environment guardians in India: we may soon see cars which operate on compressed air.
This news had already generated excitement some 2 years ago, when Tata Motors had announced the launch of a compressed air car in association with Moteur Development International of France.
[Check out the MDI air car here: MDI Website]. At that time it was stated that the MiniCAT, as it was named, would be economical to operate and be practically pollution free. The apparent cost would be Rs.350,000/- in India and the cost of a refill would be approx. Rs.90/-. However, the announcement remained just that: an announcement. 3 years on, there is no sign of the MiniCAT.
However, Guwahati automobile designer Kanak Gogoi has recently revived interest in the air car. The 49-year old native of Tekelbora village, North Lakimpur District, Assam did his early education at Laluk and then enrolled for college at Jorhat. After dropping out of college, Kanak Gogoi sold milk for 3 years and did odd jobs as well as becoming a real estate consultant for financial sustenance. All along, he never gave up his passion for making uncoventional things. Starting with a noiseless air gun that he made when in Std.VI, Kanak Gogoi went on to make a low-water boat, a gravity-operated bicycle, a hang glider, and a device for speed breakers which generates electricity. In 2004, he made an air car from unused machines in his own scrap yard and named it Pavan X. The air car works on pressurised air from a compressor which runs the piston engine of the car; the engine has been assembled from various standard market parts. In November 2009, the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) learnt about Gogoi and his inventions. Gogoi was subsequently felicited by NIF in the presence of President Pratibha Patil. Although NIF has helped out with intellectual rights for his inventions, Gogoi has not commercially marketed his machines. You can read about Kanak Gogoi's Profile Biography and Inventions here: NIF Website. Kanak Gogoi is trying to improve on the Pavan X air car and also hoping to build a small flying machine which can fly up to 6-7 feet high.
May his dreams soar!
